Vermont is just beautiful. The drive to Braintree took us through some undulating, green countryside that just had a good feel about it. We arrived at our SERVAS homestay where our hosts, Laura and Nora and their young visitor, Shannon, greeted us and put us to work :-). Adam helped with placement of a paver for the new path and I collected some eggs from the chook house. The straw bale home, constructed by the girls themselves, was nestled in 45 acres of woods and greenery. A nearby pond provided a great swimming hole. It was soooo good to wake up in the morning to a chorus of birdsong after a great night's sleep where the peace was broken only by the odd hoot of an owl. We sat around and made a great pizza and next day were shown around the local hills and mountains of Sugarbush, Warren and Waitsville. Laura and Nora's visitor, Shannon, was visiting as part of the Fresh Air Fund. This is a program that sponsors kids from the busiest boroughs of New York and provides a summer in 'fresh air'. No where could be better than spending time in Braintree, VT.
Montpelier has the claim to fame of being the USA's smallest state capital city. And it was a really cute, good feel town. Lots of cafes and we were there for the market, which was great. Our SERVAS hosts had built their house from scratch and it was totally sustainable - solar panels and a HUGE vegetable garden. Miriam and David were our hosts and David's waffles were out of this world. Made with beer, too. Yummo. Miriam was an amazing orator and we could have stayed and listened to her views on the world for ages.
